Choosing the right soft starter involves matching it to your motor’s power rating, load type, and environmental conditions while prioritising key protection features. 

  1. Begin by selecting based on the motor full-load current (FLC), and consider upsizing by 1–2 steps for heavier or high inertia loads. 
  2. Next, look for built-in protection features such as overcurrent, phase imbalance, underload, and overload. 
  3. Finally, select a soft starter with an appropriate IP rating to withstand dust, heat, and harsh industrial conditions. For instance, IP65 for mining environments.

A soft starter is an electronic motor control device that gradually increases the voltage supplied to an electric motor during startup. By controlling the voltage ramp-up, it significantly reduces inrush current and mechanical stress compared to direct-on-line (DOL) starting. 

A soft starter limits peak starting currents to around 2–4 times full-load current while controlling torque to ensure smooth, controlled acceleration. Many models also include a soft-stop functionality. This helps prevent issues such as water hammers in pump systems or mechanical shock in driven equipment. 

Widely used across industrial applications, soft starters help extend equipment lifespan by minimising energy consumption/spikes during startup.

Emotron TSA Soft Starters are all manufactured in Sweden.

We supply Emotron TSA Series, which is a dual- rated Soft Starter (Normal Duty / Heavy Duty). Application must be stated at the time of quoting for us to correctly assist in sizing the Soft Starter. We supply the Emotron TSA Soft Starter as IP20. We can engineer a solution to supply up to IP66 with the addition of a line contactor and other gear as per customer request and requirement.

FCR supplies Emotron TSA Series which has a built-in bypass contactor with a power range of 7.5kW to 450kW.
